United Empire of Earth

The United Empire of Earth (UEE) is the name of the current [Human](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/0Nwpnr6wa2-humans) governmental body. It is led by a democratically elected [Imperator](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/0Gz5BoJ9wl-uee-imperator) who serves for a single ten-year term; a [Tribunal](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/bZwq5Nr5EL-tribunal) of [High-Advocate](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/RWolAld13P-high-advocate), [High-Secretary](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/RkG2n2MWYn-high-secretary), and [High Command](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/RegxqX26ok-high-command); and the (UEE [Senate](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/VaZn8OqaNZ-senate)), a legislative body composed of elected representatives from UEE planets.

Formerly known as the [United Nations of Earth](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/R4ZQpY83oO-united-nations-of-earth), it transitioned to the [United Planets of Earth](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/0QxBjKP2PN-united-planets-of-earth) (UPE) in SEY 2523 and was given its current name in 2546, after the conclusion of the [First Tevarin War](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/bZwQm3meJM-first-tevarin-war). Then-High-General [Ivar Messer](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/RXlXYPWk8q-ivar-messer-i), who had been the face of the UPE's recruitment campaign during the war, claimed that the Tribunal system and Senate were rendered ineffective by bureaucracy. He thus introduced the concept of [Prime Citizen](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/V7gM82vNmr-prime-citizen), a singular figurehead of the government that would unclog the perceived governmental quagmire. As soon as he was elected to the office he created, Messer stripped the High-Secretary and High-Advocate of their positions and utilized the power of the military to declare himself Imperator for life.

His descendants reigned as dictators for centuries, modifying and corrupting the system to further ensconce their power. The [last Messer](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/RwZBaD4Mdq-linton-messer-xi) was deposed in SEY 2792 after a [popular uprising](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/bE3rKa32P7-anti-messer-revolution). Under the leadership of the new Imperator, former Senator of Earth [Erin Toi](https://robertsspaceindustries.com/galactapedia/article/R4ZG3NxM7Y-erin-toi), the government was re-organized into its current democratic form.
